Bailes wins rain-shortened King of the Commnonwealth at VMS

Ross Bailes made the trek to Virginia Motor Speedway (Jamaica, Va.) on Saturday afternoon to enter his Billy Hicks-owned No. 79 Late Model into battle with the Ultimate Southeast Series for the Virginia is For Racing Lovers King of the Commonwealth. (Kevin Ritchie photo)

In a field of 27 cars, Bailes clocked in second-fastest overall before picking up a heat race victory. Rolling off third for the feature, Ross snuck past race-leader Brandon Overton for the top spot on lap 17 while the leader battled lap traffic. With the light precipitation turning into showers, Bailes was tabbed the winner after officials were forced to call the race on lap 23 due to rain. He scored his second win of the season and 10th career series triumph ahead of Zack Mitchell, Ben Watkins, Kenny Moreland, and Dale Hollidge. He bagged a $20,000 prize.
